Recruitment for RDA Board and RDA Steering Committee (RSC) Members 2 October 2016

The RDA Board and the RDA Steering Committee (RSC) have now taken the next step in implementing the new Governance Model by recruiting for a number of key posts on both the Board and the RSC.

Whilst these are unpaid roles, they will provide applicants with valuable developmental opportunities and a unique and exciting opportunity to be an integral part of the team responsible for leading the development of RDA, the global standard enabling discovery of content. The RDA Fund will cover travel and subsistence expenses for meetings.

RDA Steering Committee Chair and Others From the Field of Cataloguing Receive IFLA Awards 22 August 2016

RDA Board were delighted to see that Gordon Dunsire, Chair of the RDA Steering Committee, was acknowledged with an IFLA Medal in the closing ceremony of the 2016 World Library and Information Congress in Columbus, Ohio last week. The medal is awarded to international librarians who have made an outstanding contribution to their field, and Gordon was recognised for his distinguished service to IFLA and international librarianship, advancing the field of bibliographic data, linked data, and the semantic web.

RSC Meeting in November 2016 – Observers Welcome 11 August 2016

The RDA Steering Committee (RSC) will meet November 7-11, 2016, in Frankfurt, Germany at Deutsche Nationalbibliothek.

The committee will continue to discuss the transition to a new governance model that is part of the commitment to ongoing internationalisation of RDA and to collaboration with other cultural heritage description communities. Also on the agenda will be discussions about the impact of the FRBR-Library Reference Model on RDA and the restructuring of RDA Toolkit.

RDA in Europe 10 August 2016

The interim UK community representation has merged with the DNB community representation to form a single interim Europe Region representation on the RDA Steering Committee.

Renate Behrens remains on the committee as the representative of the Interim Europe Region. Alan Danskin, the representative of the former UK community, has stepped down from the committee.

RSC Secretary Appointed 21 July 2016

Linda Barnhart joined the RDA Steering Committee (RSC) on July 18, 2016. She will succeed Judy Kuhagen, RSC Secretary, who will conclude her service in April 2017; this overlap period will allow for thorough training and a smooth transition. The RSC Secretary supports and coordinates processes which support the development and promotion of RDA.

Making RDA Relevant to the Broader Community : a statement from the RDA Board 24 June 2016

RDA is a continually evolving standard that aims to reflect the requirements of the description, cataloguing and metadata community. One of its original aims was to be applicable across cultures, sectors and perspectives. What does that mean, and what is happening to make that a reality?

RDA is a package of data elements, guidelines, and instructions for creating library and cultural heritage resource metadata that are well-formed according to international models for user-focussed linked data applications.

Posting for RSC Secretary 30 May 2016

The RDA Board and RDA Steering Committee (RSC) are seeking a qualified library professional with expertise in RDA and cataloging to take on the role of RSC Secretary. The purpose of the role is to support and coordinate processes which support the development and promotion of RDA. This is a contract position with a 3-year term, and there is no location requirement (the work may be done from home). There will be a period of overlap with the term of the current secretary to allow for thorough training and a fluid transition for this crucial post.

RDA Full Record Examples and Rballs 23 May 2016

The RDA full record examples on the Toolkit website have been revised. The examples show authority and bibliographic records in both an RDA element view and a MARC encoding view of the record.

There are also two examples showing diagrams of specific RDA entities, elements, and relationships. More will be added later.

That examples page also includes a link to rball versions of some of the bibliographic examples; they are available in both RIMMF native RDA format and RDF linked data format.

2015 Approved RDA Proposals 9 March 2016

The final versions of the proposals approved by the RDA Steering Committee during and after the November 2015 meeting have been posted on this website. Access to these "Sec final" documents is available via the new documents page (http://rda-rsc.org/newrscdocs).

The changes in RDA will not be in effect until they appear in the April 2016 Update of RDA Toolkit.

Italian Translation and Other International Activities 8 March 2016

The RSC welcomes the addition of the Italian translation of RDA to RDA Toolkit. The translation joins the English, Finnish, French, German, and Spanish versions of RDA already available. The new translation is accessible to all with a subscription to RDA Toolkit, and is complete through the April 2014 update to RDA.
