Please register for the October ALA eLearning webinar Cataloging Video Resources with RDA and MARC21: Best Practices here.

Produced by ALA eLearning, this two-part webinar series takes place Wednesday, October 26 and Thursday, October 27, 2022, starting at 2:30pm Eastern/1:30pm Central/12:30pm Mountain/11:30am Pacific. Each session will last 90 minutes.

If you work with videos—whether those are physical video objects or streaming resources—you need to know how RDA addresses cataloging for these resources and what the latest best practices are.

This two-part webinar will cover how to apply rules in the original RDA Toolkit and OLAC (Online Audiovisual Catalogers) best practices to catalog DVDs and Blu-rays as well as to streaming videos. Although presented in the context of the original Toolkit, these rules and practices will also be relevant as libraries learn about and prepare for future implementations of the new official version of the Toolkit.

You will learn about selecting preferred sources of information; recording descriptive elements and authorized and variant access points; specialized MARC tags; and genre/form headings. You’ll also learn about resources that can help you explore more about these topics independently.

After participating in this event, you will:

  • Understand how to apply instructions in the original RDA Toolkit to the cataloging of DVDs, Blu-rays, and streaming videos.
  • Understand which elements are required according to the RDA Toolkit and/or recommended by OLAC, the Program for Cooperative Cataloging, and other organizations.
  • Understand how to record and format information in newer specialized MARC tags for videos
  • Become familiar with OLAC best practices guidelines for cataloging DVDs, Blu-rays, streaming media, and others (Video Language Coding, Library of Congress Genre-Form Thesaurus (LCGFT) for Moving Images, Joint MLA/OLAC 33x/34x Task Group recommendations)

About the instructor:

Jeannette Ho currently holds the position of Cataloging/Metadata Librarian at Texas A&M University Libraries. She has worked at Texas A&M since 1999, when she was first hired as the Special Formats Cataloger, specializing in audiovisual formats. She has published articles on metadata and the cataloging of videos and has chaired two OLAC task forces that developed best practices guidelines for streaming media (the original guide for AACR2 published in 2008 and one based on RDA first published in 2015).

This event will be hosted in Zoom. Automatic captions will be enabled for this event. This event will be recorded, and registrants will receive access to the recording within a day after the event ends.
